5 Benefits for Veterans with Service-Connected Disabilities

5 Benefits for Veterans with Service-Connected Disabilities
5 Benefits for Veterans with Service-Connected Disabilities

Veterans with disabilities related to their service in the armed forces are eligible for many federal benefit programs. In this article, we will explore a few programs that you may be eligible for if you have a service-connected disability. We will also share information on programs available to all Veterans, regardless of disability status. Through these programs and many others, we recognize the sacrifice our service members make and support their wellbeing.

Health Benefits for Veterans

All enrolled Veterans have access to the Basic Medical Benefits Package for Veterans. This program provides medical benefits, including primary, specialty care, and preventive services, and in some cases dental care. Eligible Veterans can apply for these benefits on the VA healthcare website.

Caregiver Programs and Services are available for eligible Veterans and their families. This program provides training to help with caregiving for Veterans through the following services:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Travel expenses (including lodging and per diem while accompanying Veterans undergoing care)
  • Access to health care benefits program (if the caregiver is not already entitled to care or services under a health care plan)
  • Mental health services and counseling
  • Comprehensive VA caregiver training provided by Easter Seals
  • Respite Care (not less than 30 days per year)

Access to Mental Health Services and treatment are also available for a range of conditions.

Home Loans and Compensatory Benefits

Veterans’ Compensation for Service-Connected Disabilities provides eligible Veterans with a monthly, tax-free payment. The amount of the payment is determined based on the degree of your disability. To find out if you are eligible, review the conditions provided by the VA. If you are eligible, you may apply online. The Veterans Pension program provides financial benefits but does not require a service-connected disability. The VA Home Loan Program can help you get a home loan with a guaranteed percentage of the loan for a down payment.

More Information

For all Veteran benefit programs, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recommends visiting the AskVA (AVA) website first for any questions. The VA provides eligibility information and other resources on their website, like tracking for your claims and appointment management. We encourage you to browse our Military: Active Duty and Veterans category on Benefits.gov for all Veterans benefits on our site.
