Division of Coal Mine Workers' Compensation (DCMWC)


The mission of the Division of Coal Mine Workers' Compensation, or Federal Black Lung Program, is to administer claims filed under the Black Lung Benefits Act. The Act provides monthly monetary payments and medical benefits to coal miners who are totally disabled due to pneumoconiosis (black lung disease) arising from their employment in or around coal mines. Monthly monetary payments are also awarded to a miner's dependent survivors.

To be eligible for this benefit program, you must be one of the following:

  • A coal miner, who suffers from an illness caused by pneumoconiosis (black lung disease), or
  • The surviving spouse of a minor who died due to pneumoconiosis.

Present and former coal miners (including certain transportation and construction workers who were exposed to coal mine dust) and their surviving dependents, including surviving spouses, orphaned children, adult disabled children, and fully dependent parents, brothers and sisters, may file claims.
