Iowa Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)


Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a Federally-funded program that helps low-income households with their home energy bills. LIHEAP can help you stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of health and safety problems (such as illness, fire, or eviction). Funds are also available to assist with reconnecting drinking water and wastewater as well as averting disconnections.

The Iowa LIHEAP program may be able to offer you one or more of the following types of assistance:

  • One-time payment to your heating utility
  • Assistance averting a disconnection or reconnecting service
  • Emergency delivery of deliverable fuels
  • Cooling assistance

To be eligible for this benefit program, you must be a resident of Iowa and you must have an energy and/or water burden.

In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

*For households with more than eight people, add $10,280 per additional person. Always check with the appropriate managing agency to ensure the most accurate guidelines.
