West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program (WV CHIP)


The West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program (WV CHIP) provides quality health insurance to eligible children and strives to develop a health care system in which all West Virginia children can access health care coverage. WV CHIP is a free or low-cost health plan for children from birth up to age 19. Covered services include preventive care, such as well-child visits and immunizations, prescriptions, hospital visits, dental, vision, and mental health services.

The West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program (WV CHIP) provides quality health insurance to eligible children and strives to develop a health care system in which all West Virginia children can access health care coverage. WV CHIP is a free or low-cost health plan for children from birth up to age 19. To be eligible for this benefit program, you must be a resident of West Virginia and meet all of the following:

  • Either 18 years of age and under or a primary care giver with a child(ren) 18 years of age and under, and
  • A U.S. Citizen, National, or a Non-Citizen legally admitted into the U.S, and
  • Uninsured (and ineligible for Medicaid).

In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

*For households with more than eight people, add $13,450 per additional person. Always check with the appropriate managing agency to ensure the most accurate guidelines.


Apply online on the WVpath website. Use WVpath to complete and submit an online health plan application. You can apply for Pregnant Women and Children Medicaid and the West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program.

Contact your Local Health Departments by County/Area in West Virginia. An application can be mailed to you at no charge. The application will include a return mail, postage-paid envelope for your convenience. For information on your Local Health Departments go to the West Virginia CHIP page.
