GovBenefits.gov Highlights Volunteer Opportunities in Emergency Preparedness
As the nation recovers from recent natural disaster events, GovBenefits.gov is highlighting volunteer opportunities that may make the difference in your community's preparedness.

Citizen Corps is a volunteer network of citizens and first responder groups designed to make families and communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to any kind of disaster. Launched in January 2002 as part of the USA Freedom Corps and the President's Call to Service, Citizen Corps has already organized in 55 U.S. states and territories. In local communities, Citizen Corps Councils coordinate programs, develop community action plans, assess possible threats and identify local resources.

GovBenefits.gov is highlighting some of the benefit programs available for first responders and those impacted by a federally declared disaster.

EMI Independent Study Program
The EMI Independent Study program consists of self-paced courses designed for both the general public and people who have emergency management responsibilities. They are offered free-of-charge to all who qualify for enrollment, and college credit can be obtained through a for-fee service after successful completion of a course. Each Independent Study Course includes lessons with practice exercise and a final examination. Those who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI. Course completion times vary from two to fourteen hours, depending on the course and the student's background. For more information, visit the EMI Independent Study Program.

EMI Residential Education Program
The Emergency Management Institute Residential Education Program improves emergency management practices among state, local and tribal government managers, and Federal officials, in response to emergencies and disasters. Programs embody the Comprehensive Emergency Management System by unifying the elements of management common to all emergencies: planning, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. National Fire Academy Educational Program
The National Fire Academy Education Program provides training to any individual who is a member of a fire department or has significant responsibility for fire prevention and control. For more information, visit the National Fire Academy Educational Program.
