Celebrating Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month

This month, Benefits.gov is proud to celebrate the 24th year of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM). This commemorative time celebrates the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. This demographic includes American citizens with heritage from all the countries in the Asian continent, along with countries in the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

In 1977, APAHM began as a 10-day observance in the beginning of May. The holiday was extended to a month in 1992, when Congress passed Public Law 102-450, which officially designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month each year. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese citizen to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. For more history, events, and information on APAHM, visit AsianPacificHeritage.gov.
