Celebrating America's Workers with Disabilities

For the past 70 years, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has celebrated National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October. During NDEAM, we honor and celebrate the thousands of contributing American citizens with disabilities. Benefits.gov partners with 17 federal agencies to provide information on a number of resources available to citizens with disabilities and their families.

The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) within DOL offers the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) service which provides free, expert and confidential guidance on workplace accommodations and other disability employment issues. With assistance in English and Spanish, the JAN provides a list of services available per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Benefits.gov has more information about family and medical leave, workplace accommodations and training, disability insurance and, lastly, supplemental income. If you are a disabled veteran, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and DOL provide various resources that may be of assistance to you. The Veterans Employment Training Service (VETS) connects disabled veterans with resources and programs to help maintain careers in the workforce. For example, Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialists offer intensive services to all veterans including disabled veterans, economically or educationally disadvantaged veterans, and veterans with other barriers to employment (especially homeless veterans). Visit the Benefits.gov Military: Active Duty and Veterans category page for similar programs that offer special services, adaptive equipment, and pension programs.

If you or a loved one is in need of a living arrangement, Benefits.gov has information on independent living services, home based primary care, nursing home care, clothing allowances and more, all listed on the Living Assistance page. While these resources are created to assist veterans, family caregivers may also qualify for various Caregiver Programs and Services.
