We go to school and work, we run errands, we take care of our homes, and we have many responsibilities in our communities. In each of these areas, we assume some level of risk-although they may be low, there is the chance of danger in any scenario. Natural disasters in particular can affect our lives without any notice or warning. That's why wants to let you know about a few programs to help keep you and your family safe and protected should a natural disaster impact you and your family, no matter what you're doing.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury administers the Casualties, Disasters, and Theft program, which offers tax relief for casualty losses that result from the destruction of, or damage to your property from any sudden, unexpected, or unusual event such as a flood, hurricane, tornado, fire, or earthquake.

Economic Injury and Disaster Loans, managed by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), help protect non-farm, private sector businesses from disaster losses. This loan program can provide up to $2 million of financial assistance (actual loan amounts are based on amount of economic injury) to small businesses or private, non-profit organizations that suffer substantial economic injury as a result of the declared disaster, regardless of whether the applicant sustained physical damage.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program, administered by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), provides unemployment benefits to individuals who have become unemployed as a result of a Presidentially declared disaster. In order to qualify for this benefit your employment or self-employment must have been lost or interrupted as a direct result of a major disaster declared by the President of the United States.
