This May, Let's Honor our Heroes!

May is National Military Appreciation Month and Benefits.gov wants to take this opportunity to thank all those who have or who currently serve in our nations armed forces. National Military Appreciation Month includes many special observances for our troops, including Loyalty Day (May 1), VE Day (May 8), Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 8), Armed Forces Day (May 16), and Memorial Day (May 25).

If you have or are currently serving in the armed forces, or know someone who has served, we encourage you to check out a few of the military-specific programs below.

Basic Medical Benefits Package for Veterans: All enrolled veterans receive the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA's) comprehensive Medical Benefits Package which includes preventative, primary, and specialty care, diagnostic, inpatient and outpatient care services. Veterans may receive additional benefits, such as dental care depending on their unique qualifications.

Armed Forces Tax Benefits: If you are filing your taxes late or have requested an extension, the Armed Forces Tax Benefits program offers tax credit or relief for special tax situations of active members of the U.S. armed forces. In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must have been in active military service for at least 24 months and you must be a taxpayer who is interested in receiving tax information and tax preparation assistance.

As always, but especially in May, it is important to thank and appreciate our armed forces for the service they provide to the United States. To do so, Benefits.gov wants to make it easier for military members and veterans to find benefit program information available to them. We encourage you to view other Military: Active Duty and Veterans benefit programs on our site and to try our confidential Benefit Finder tool to identify other benefits you may be eligible to receive.
