Navigating Benefits.gov User Series: What We Can Do for You!

Welcome to Benefits.gov, the official benefits website of the U.S. Government. Our site contains information and eligibility requirements on 1,000 government assistance programs including financial assistance, loans, grants, scholarships, fellowships, counseling, insurance, and many more. We realize our site has a lot to offer, so we wanted to highlight our core functionality to help you get the most out of your visit. Our mission is to help our users find benefits information from our 17 partner agencies and point you in the direction of where to apply.

On Benefits.gov, you can:

Determine Eligibility

Benefits.gov offers a free and confidential tool called the Benefit Finder. This is the site's main feature and is the first place users should start when visiting Benefits.gov. The Benefit Finder helps determine eligibility for all benefits listed on the site. After filling out the questionnaire, users are provided with a list of programs they may be eligible for, based on the qualifications they submitted. Users can email and print their results for later use.

Browse Benefits

Most users visit our site already having an idea of what type of benefit they're looking for, but they may not know where exactly it is on our site. Are you looking to see which Energy Assistance or Food Nutrition programs are available? Are you a student, veteran, or looking for a loan? Our Browse by Category section can direct you in each of these searches. You can also browse by Agency to find benefits you may qualify for.

Search

Do you have a program in mind and want to see what information we have associated with it? Type the program title into the "search" feature to find all the information on our site that matches your request. You can refine the results to show everything from new articles, benefit programs, and videos.

Gather Program Information and Determine Next Steps

Once you find a benefit program, you can read the program description, eligibility requirements, and steps to apply on the benefit detail page. Please remember, Benefits.gov does not have any involvement with the application process of the programs on our site. All applications are managed through our partner agencies.

Have any other questions?

Keep in mind, we do not have access to any of users' personal applications or benefit information and cannot answer questions about benefit applications, user accounts or pins, cases, or personal situations. If you would like to provide feedback on Benefits.gov, please submit a Contact Us Form.
