Ending Hunger on the Holidays

Ending Hunger on the Holidays
Ending Hunger on the Holidays

The holidays are a time to gather with family and friends, often over a meal. But, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2018 more than 14 million households struggled to have enough food to meet the needs of themselves and their families due to a lack of money or other resources.

Benefits.gov offers information on a variety of food assistance programs, to all ranges of age and location, to help those dealing with hunger and food insecurity.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP, administered by USDA, is the largest federal nutrition assistance program. SNAP provides financial assistance on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card for eligible low-income individuals and families. This EBT card is used like a debit card to purchase eligible food in authorized retail stores. For more information on SNAP, check out our article SNAP: Keeping Nutrition and Health a Priority or visit our SNAP Program Page. To find out if you're eligible to receive SNAP benefits, visit USDA's SNAP Eligibility Page. If you have further questions about SNAP, or how to apply, contact your state's Local SNAP Office.

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

WIC provides supplemental food, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, referrals, and access to health and social services to low-income, pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, as well as infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk. For more information, check out our article Everything You Need to Know about WIC or visit our WIC Program Page. For those who are already WIC recipients, check out the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) to receive coupons for fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs. These coupons can be used at farmers' markets and stands.

Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

TEFAP helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans by providing emergency food assistance at no cost. Through TEFAP, USDA purchases nutritious, high-quality foods and makes them available to state distributing agencies to provide to local agencies and food banks. For more information, visit our Emergency Food Assistance Program Page or contact your State Distributing Agency.

Benefits.gov wishes you and your loved ones a happy and healthy holiday season! We encourage you to fill out our Benefit Finder questionnaire to find more benefits you may be eligible to receive. You can also browse our Food and Nutrition category to find other food assistance programs.
