Program Description

Historic Preservation Fund Grants to Tribes support Tribal Historic Preservation Offices that have signed partnership agreements with the National Park Service to assume the duties of the State Historic Preservation Office in carrying out the goals of the national historic preservation program by surveying, documenting, and recording their historic and cultural resources and guiding preservation activities at the Tribal level.

Eligible entities include federally-recognized tribes that have an approved Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) partnership agreement with the National Park Service (NPS) and an appointed Tribal Historic Preservation Officer.

Application Process

Congress appropriates a total amount of HPF grant funds to Tribes in its annual budget. NPS applies an approved apportionment formula to calculate the amount of each individual Tribe’s awards. Each tribe submits an annual application for its apportioned amount through Grants.gov. Specific application requirements can change from year to year. See the current year’s application requirements.
