Program Description

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has created a program, in partnership with State, tribal, and local agencies, where families can go to get their child car seats checked. Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children in this country. Car seats can greatly reduce the risk of dying for infants and young children. They have saved the lives of more than 10,000 children over the past 40 years. But many children are not using the correct car seat for their age and size, and many seats are not installed properly. That could reduce their effectiveness. Getting your car seat checked by a safety professional could help save your child's life.

General Program Requirements

Everyone is welcome to use the online Car Seat Inspection Station Locator. To see a "how to" video on installing the different types of car seats, go to Car Seat Installation How-To Video. Also, please register your car seat with the car seat manufacturer. This will allow the manufacturer to send you a notice if there is a safety recall.

Your Next Steps

The following information will lead you to the next steps to apply for this program.

Application Process

To find a car seat inspection station near you where you can have your car seat checked, go to Car Seat Inspection Station Locator. You can search by state or zip code to find the nearest location. Please call the location to set up an appointment with a certified safety professional. This service is free at nearly all locations.
