Program Description

The NHSC SP awards scholarships to health professions students committed to a career in primary care and service in underserved communities of greatest need.

General Program Requirements

An applicant must:

  1. Be accepted for enrollment, or be enrolled, as a full-time student in a school located in a State;
  2. Be pursuing a course of study or program offered by the school leading to a degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine, dentistry, or other health profession, or an appropriate degree from a graduate program of behavioral and mental health;
  3. Be eligible for, or hold, an appointment as a Commissioned Corps officer in the U.S. Public Health Service or be eligible for selection for civilian service in the NHSC;
  4. Be a National of the United States; and
  5. Submit an application to participate in the NHSC SP and a signed SP Contract as described in section 338A(f) of the Act (42 U.S.C. 254l(f)).

NHSC SP Selection:
The program will take into consideration those factors which are determined to be necessary to participate in the NHSC SP. These factors may include, but are not limited to work experience, community background, career goals, faculty recommendation, and academic performance.

The program will not select any applicant who:

  1. Owes an obligation for health professional service to a Federal, State, or local government entity, or to any other entity, unless the applicant submits, and the Secretary approves, a written statement from the entity that the service obligation owed to the entity will be fulfilled before the applicant enters into an SP Contract; or
  2. Has breached or otherwise failed to fulfill an obligation for health professional service to a Federal, State or local government entity, or to any other entity, even if the applicant has not been penalized or placed in default by the entity, has subsequently satisfied the obligation to the entity through service or monetary payment, or the obligation has been waived, canceled, or otherwise discharged.
