Program Description

Reclamation receives annual appropriations to provide technical assistance to federally recognized Indian tribes in the 17 western states for activities involving the development, management and protection of tribal water and related resources. Under this program, Reclamation may provide in-kind technical services, or funding that a tribe may use to provide directly, or hire an outside entity to provide, the proposed technical-assistance activity. Examples include water-needs assessments, water-development studies, infrastructure evaluations and design, etc.

General Program Requirements

Only federally recognized tribes in the 17 western states are eligible to apply. The funding request must relate to the use, development, or protection of tribal water and related resources. Funding is limited to a maximum of $100,000 per approved activity per year, for up to two years. Reclamation is not permitted to fund feasibility studies or construction, but may fund activities that are precursors to both.
