Program DescriptionThe Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program can help you and your family meet your health care needs. You can choose from among Consumer-Driven and High Deductible plans that offer catastrophic risk protection with higher deductibles, health savings/reimbursable accounts and lower premiums, or Fee-for-Service (FFS) plans, and their Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), or Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) if you live (or sometimes if you work) within the area serviced by the plan.
The FEHB plan brochures show you what services and supplies are covered and the level of coverage. Review the brochures carefully. The brochures are formatted to ensure they are all organized alike. You can get brochures from the health plans or your human resource office.
General Program Requirements
As a Federal employee or employee of certain tribes, tribal organizations or Urban Indian organizations, you are eligible to elect FEHB coverage, unless your position is excluded by law or regulation. Your Federal agency or tribal employer applies these rules and determines your eligibility. However, there are numerous special provisions for people in part-time or intermittent employment, temporary appointments, and specifically named positions.
For Federal employees, the chapter titled "Eligibility for Health Benefits" in the FEHB Handbook explains these and other eligibility provisions. Please visit the online FEHB Handbook for additional information.
For employees of certain tribes, tribal organizations or Urban Indian organizations, eligibility provisions are provided in the Tribal Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Handbook.
