Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families


The Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, formerly Aid to Families with Dependent Children, program provides a variety of benefits and services to Federally-recognized tribes, American Indian, and Alaska Native families. Benefits may include childcare assistance, job preparation, and work assistance.

Benefits may include childcare assistance, job preparation, and work assistance.


To be eligible for this benefit program, you must be all of the following:

  • Native American/American Indian, and
  • Unemployed or about to become unemployed, and
  • Enrolled in a federally recognized American Indian tribe or Alaska Native village, and
  • Live on or near an Indian reservation, and
  • Your financial situation is characterized as low income or very low income.


To apply for Tribal TANF benefits, you must check with the tribe in whose service area you reside.
