- Have high artistic qualities.
- Have contemporary insights into American life and culture.
- Explore issues affecting democratic societies.
- Take into account cultural sensitivities of foreign public and appropriateness for youth audiences.
- Offer diverse viewpoints and balanced treatment of subject matter.

There is no application or submission process for the American Film Showcase. Films are selected by a committee to participate in the American Film Showcase program.
