Nursing Home Care
Managing Agency Veterans Health Administration (VHA)

Program Description

Nursing home care can be provided in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Nursing Homes (now known as Community Living Centers) for Veterans who are in need of care, but are not acutely ill and not in need of hospital care.

Priority is given to Veterans with service-connected disabilities. If space and resources are available, other Veterans may be considered.

Generally, Veterans who do not have service-connected disabilities for which they're entitled to compensation must agree to make a co-payment. These Veterans must complete a financial statement, and VA establishes a co-payment based on that information.

General Program Requirements

To begin with, you are encouraged to enroll in the VA health care system (or qualify based on one of the exceptions in the law). Go to "Basic Medical Benefits for Veterans" to see the program requirements.

Nursing Home Care is a regular, covered benefit for these two groups:

  • Veterans rated 70 percent service-connected or greater
  • Veterans who need nursing home care for their service-connected disabilities
Even if you are not a member of one of these groups, you may be found eligible for Nursing Home Care if space and resources are available.

Generally, in order to receive VA benefits and services the Veteran/Servicemember's character of discharge or service must be under conditions other than dishonorable (e.g., honorable, under honorable conditions, general). However, individuals receiving undesirable, bad conduct, and other types of dishonorable discharges may qualify for VA benefits depending on a determination made by VA.
