Program DescriptionThe Food Assistance Division administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Alabama. The Food Assistance Program's purpose is to end hunger and improve nutrition by providing monthly benefits to eligible low income households to help them buy the food they need for good health. The eligibility rules and benefit amounts, based on income and household size, are determined by regulations issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service.
General Program RequirementsIn order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the state of Alabama and have an annual household income of less than $14,532 if one person lives in the household; $19,680 if two people live in the household; $24,828 if three people live in the household; $29,976 if four people live in the household; $35,124 if five people live in the household; $40,272 if six people live in the household; $45,420 if seven people live in the household; or $50,568 if eight people live in the household. For larger households, add $5,148 for each additional person in the home.

Application ProcessApplications must be filed in the county where you live or online. You may fax, mail, or bring the signed application to your County Department of Human Resources (DHR) office for processing.
To apply for food assistance benefits online, please visit MyAlabama.gov. Before you can complete the application, you must first register for an account. Your completed application will be sent to the DHR office in the county where you live.
